After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Trace the historical development of blackface entertainment and its role in shaping diverse American racial identities from the 19th to early 20th centuries.
  • Identify diverse racial stereotypes promoted by blackface minstrelsy and understand their impact on the social relations of Black and White Americans.
  • Engage with primary and secondary sources in a critical and scholarly manner.
  • Assess the enduring legacy of blackface in modern media and entertainment, considering how racialized performance continues to inform contemporary perceptions of race.
